On May 21, 2023 (local time), the SID Display Week 2023 kicked off in Los Angeles. Using a bright-screen demo, Visionox presented its self-developed industry-leading dual-band dual-polarized 5G millimeter-wave antenna-on-display (AoD) integrated into an AMOLED display with a touch function. Dr. Huan-Chu Huang (IET Fellow), head of the antenna design team of Visionox, delivered a speech titled Antenna-on-Display (AoD): Role, Main Requirements, and Promising Antenna Evolution at the "On-screen Radio Frequency and Antenna Application" session.

It is also worth mentioning that at the SID DW 2023, Visionox's 5G dual-band dual-polarized millimeter-wave antenna-on-display won the 2023 People's Choice Award.

The evolution of mobile communications and the coexistence of multiple networks have resulted in an increasing number of mobile phone antennas and required supporting frequency bands; meanwhile, having a higher screen-to-body ratio on a smartphone further limits the antenna layout freedom and available clearance area. In addition, increasingly rich mobile apps have derived more diverse scenarios for handheld devices, while traditional built-in mobile phone antennas remain more sensitive to the user's hand or metal shield (for example, the phone is placed on a metal table), leading to degradation in antenna performance and wireless communication quality. The AoD design integrates an antenna within a display panel. In other words, the display panel serves as the antenna carrier, which makes the antenna layout more free. Also, with a good antenna layout design, AoD enables less blockage by hands and metal, thus avoiding degradation in antenna performance and wireless communication quality.

Visionox's self-developed AoD technology is a dual-band dual-polarized 5G millimeter-wave antenna-on-display that made its public debut with a bright-screen demo. That is, assuming that priority is given to ensuring optical and touch performance (because the AoD design difficulty will increase greatly if it is necessary to ensure optical and touch performance), the AoD design would subtly integrate flexible and transparent 5G millimeter-wave antennas into an AMOLED display (not externally attached to the display glass). This design can achieve dual-band coverage (5G mm Wave bands n260 and n261) with wireless roaming and carrier aggregation capabilities; at the same time, it can realize dual-polarization radiations with multiple-input multiple-output capabilities. It can also reduce the probability of unstable wireless communication quality or wireless disconnection caused by polarization mismatch, delivering a more robust, smoother, and faster 5G experience.

Dr. Huan-Chu Huang from Visionox Innovation Research Institute said in his speech, "AoD breaks new ground in antenna design, but it also faces challenges with increasing dimensions and intensity. Compared with other types of antenna for handheld wireless systems, such as built-in, bezel, and back cover, AoD can enable less blockage by hands and wider beam coverage for better wireless communication quality, especially for millimeter wave bands. Therefore, as the screen-to-body ratio increases over time, AoD can potentially be used for handheld wireless systems."

"Appreciate the values of others as do to one's own, and the world will become a harmonious whole." The dual-band dual-polarized 5G millimeter-wave antenna-on-display helps improve the transmission quality of wireless communication and supports a more extreme display design to enable new wireless communications and enjoy a brand-new visual experience.
